Beginners usually ask which one is the simplest quilt to make and the answer is a Basic Block Quilt. Today we provide you with simple step by step instructions on how to sew your first block which is the basic for making a block quilt. This is a great way to practice making a quilt block before starting on a big block quilt project.
It is very important that you cut your fabric precisely otherwise the finished quilt block won't line up correctly. The best way to get an accurate cut is to use a rotary cutter, cutting mate and a quilter's ruler. These tools will make all the difference in the world. To get you started as quickly as possible, you can also use pre-cut fabric strips from a Jelly Roll. Jelly Rolls are a great option as they will save you time and they will provide you with a variety of fabric designs without you having to purchase yardages of each design. Tools & Supplies needed: Standard Sewing Machine Iron Rotary Cutter Cutting Mate 4 Fabric Strips (or more if you want to make a bigger block) In today's quilt block I am using two Amy Butler fabric designs: Morning Glory Linen and Wall Flower Cherry. I cut two fabric strips each each design for a total of 4 fabric strips. Sew all 4 fabric strips together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Once all 4 fabric strips are sewn together, it should look like this: Now I want to cut this finished fabric strip into 4 squares. To cut perfect squares, here is a tip: fold the fabric diagonally at 90 degrees as shown in this picture... ...then use your quilter's ruler and rotary cuter to cut the fabric as shown in this picture... ...continue to do so until you have 4 fabric squares. I have laid them out in the format I want them to be sewn together in this picture: Once all 4 fabric quilt squares are sewn together with a 1/4" seam allowance, your final product should look like this: Now you have your first finished quilt block. You can continue to make these quilt blocks using these step by step instructions until you have enough quilt blocks to make a quilt in the desired size. Or you can use the quilt block for smaller projects if you like. In this case, I use the finished quilt block to make a fun and modern pillow. I use the quilt block on one side of the cover and I use the Morning Glory Linen on the other side. Take a look at the final product: How easy and how much fun was that? So easy and so much fun. Depending on the color and the fabric design you are choosing, this one basic quilt block design can look entirely different. Let your imagination take its course.....
