Ever wonder what a fabric layer cake is? Well, it sure sounds yummy but it is not something we can eat (how unfortunate). A layer cake is a set of pre-cut fabric squares with each fabric square measuring 10" X 10". If you are making a quilt, you can use either the entire 10" x 10" fabric piece as part of your quilt and/or you can "slice" it in various different shapes and sizes. Maybe that is why it is called a "layer cake".

Here are a couple of options of how you can slice your cake:
  • Cut the 10" x 10" fabric square into quarters and it will provide you with 4 finished fabric squares each measuring 4.5" x 4.5".
  • Cut the 10" x 10" fabric square into quarters as above. Now cut the 4.5" x 4.5" finished squares in quarters again and you will end up with 8 finished squares each measuring 2" x 2".
  • Cut the 10" x 10" fabric square twice diagonally to create 4 quarter square finished triangles measuring 8.5".
  • Cut the 10" x 10" fabric square into quarters. Now cut the quarters once diagonally and you will end up with 8 finished half square triangles each measuring 4".
