ISTANBUL, TURKEY

We went to the dreaded buffet for breakfast which is getting less dreadful because I think the crowds are thinning out in there.

We meet in Team World as we did yesterday to begin our tour of Istanbul with Sharif again.

We head over in our mini bus to the Hippodrome where the chariot races took place a few years ago.

We moved on to the Blue Mosque where even today there is worship services conducted in there. We didn’t sit in on any. Didn’t feel we needed to do that!

Now is the time for what all the women had waited for, the Grand Bazaar! Shopping here we come!! We pretty much split up and with our husbands close behind we take off with great gusto.

I’m looking for scarves and any other thing that meets my fancy. I end up with two scarves and a multi gem stone slide. The bazaar is a little or should I say a lot overwhelming. There are just tons and tons of merchandise to look at and heaven forbid if you touch anything. The shopkeeper is on you in a heart beat with his hard sell approach.

Sharif takes us back to the ship around 1PM but before we do that we stop in to get some baklava to go. We have many different kinds to choose from. So I get one each of four of them.

At lunch in the dining room we sit with a couple from North Carolina who were originally from Pittsburgh. She had done a whole lot of traveling with her company but still seems to like doing it in retirement. She was certainly enthusiastic about the Rick Steve’s travel group.

We meet at the martini bar again for my new flavor of martini. I had the Solstice martini. It was very good. This is the time I come up with the name for this trip, “Yeah Baby.” That’s what the bartenders would say every time they made our martinis. I can assure you that they had plenty of opportunities to repeat that phrase in our time at this bar.

We learn at this time that they have changed captains of the ship. This seems strange to do in the middle of a cruise. With my mind I’m thinking (our can’t pronounce his name captain) got the “heeve oh” and he was made to walk the plank. Well it makes a good story anyway and you must remember I’ve had a martini when this came to my mind.

I think there are a few of us that are just about filled to the brim with the rich food served at each dinner. I had the duck. About the only time I would order duck is on a cruise ship so that’s what I had tonight.

The entertainment tonight will be put on by the cruise dancers and singers. I hope it will be better than their first performance.

WRONG! They try hard but just miss the mark as far as good entertainment in my opinion.

We are off to bed with no stop in the casino this evening.

About every four months, we have a "difficult" job of selecting our favorite Moda Fabric collection for our next creative project.

The more popular Moda Fabric becomes, the more often do I receive questions about the Moda pre-cut fabric lovingly called "baked goods" by Moda and all their fans. Following is a brief description on the various Moda pre-cut fabrics.

Working with Moda Pre-Cut fabric "baked goods" can be most advantageous. First of all, you receive an entire collection in one little bundle or roll. Looking at the various designs and colors mixed in a collection is very inspiring.

Second of all, since all fabrics are pre-cut you don't have to spend hours on cutting your fabrics before starting your favorite part of a project - sewing. Not to mention the frustration it may save you since you won't be cutting your fabric unevenly or in the incorrect size.

Last but not least, it can also save you a lot of money. Instead of purchasing many different designs by the yard and having plenty of leftover fabric, you will have plenty of fabric with any of the Moda baked goods to make one larger project or multiply smaller projects without wasting any fabric.

How to make a Marimekko Unikko Fabric Keychain

If you love Marimekko fabric as much as I do, then you probably keep every little scrap of Marimekko fabric no matter how small the piece may be. I had a very small piece of Marimekko Mini Unikko blue in my stash. I thought it would be a good idea to make a Marimekko Mini Unikko blue key chain and show you step by step on how to do it yourself at home.

After only about 30 minutes you should end up with an adorable little key chain as featured here:

I sized my Marimekko Fabric remnant to 2.5 inches x 11 inches. You can easily adjust the length and width to your liking.

Now cut interfacing in the same size and iron it on to the wrong side of your fabric. Then fold the fabric strip in half and iron again.

Now iron both sides of the fabric about 1/4 inch towards the middle. I had only a very small piece of Marimekko Fabric but if you have enough fabric you should cut your fabric to be 4 times the size of your desired finished size. This way you can iron the fabric in half and line up both sides along the middle and iron it again. That is easier than trying to iron your fabric 1/4 inch like I did :)

I cut the corners on both side a little bit so it won't be too thick when trying to put the fabric into the metal key chain.

Once you are done with the ironing part your fabric strip should look like this:

Now top stitch about 1/8 inch along the edge on both sides.

You are almost done.

You can use any metal key chain but I really like this one. I don't need to use a tools in order to complete my little project. Just put in the two ends of your fabric strips (I also put some glue for extra sturdyness)....

....and close the metal flap like so:

Guess what? You are already done.

Make a bunch of them at the same time - it won't take too much more time but all your girlfriends will love them. Have fun!

How to Sew a Tote / Handbag

Today's step-by-step tutorial "How to Sew a Tote / Handbag" is going to require only a handful of pre-cut fabric strips, some scrap fabric and some iron on interfacing. Your finished good is going to look like a million dollars. If you think sewing your own tote or handbag is too difficult, don't be afraid. It is much easier than you think; just follow my step-by-step instructions on how to sew a tote / handbag and within an hour or two, you will have a new tote to show off to your girlfriends.

I wanted a fun and colorful tote for the summer so I choose a variety of Free Spirit fabric designs from the Chocolate Lollipop Collection designed by Anna Maria Horner.

To start out, I cut two fabric strips measuring 4" x 20" to make the handles. If you like your handles somewhat stiff like me, cut two iron interfacing strips measuring also 4" x 20" and iron it on to your fabric.

Fold the fabric strip in half and iron it. Once ironed "open" your fabric strip and fold the outer edge towards the middle...

...and iron your fabric strip again.

To complete your tote handles, top stitch your fabric strip as shown in my below picture:

For the body of my new tote I used 6 fabric strips from our Free Spirit Jelly Roll that has a beautiful selection of fabric design designed by Anna Maria Horner. Each fabric strip measures 2.5" X 44". I assembled them using a 1/4" seam allowance. Once assembled, I cut my assembled fabric piece into three pieces. Two of the pieces are 15.5" wide (you can choose your desired width) and remaining third piece measuring approximately 13" is being used as the inside pocket for this handbag.

I added an additional wide fabric strip to the two fabric pieces that will be the "body" of the tote (see below picture). My finished fabric pieces will measure 15.5" X 20" since I wanted a large tote but you can easily adjust the size to your liking.

I ironed on a thicker iron interfacing on to the back of my fabric pieces and top stitch along each fabric strip seam (you may choose to do so or not). Then place the two fabric pieces right side together and sew around 3 sides using a 1/4" seam allowance.

To create the bottom of your tote "pinch" the corner to create a triangle - see below picture for clarification:

The triangle should measure 4" on the bottom and 2" high. Sew along the bottom of your triangle. If you want a wide bottom, just increase the width of your triangle and vice versa.

Cut the excess fabric and repeat these steps with the other corner of your tote:

The bottom of your tote should look like this at this point of time:

Now pin your handles on to the right side of your tote 4" from the outer edge of your tote.

Now sew the handles to your tote using a 1/4" seam allowance.

To make the lining for your tote, repeat these steps: cut two fabric pieces with exact same measurement - sew on your pocket if desired - assemble the three sides with 1/4" seam allowance BUT leave an opening at the bottom of your lining - that is where you will turn your tote inside out.

Once you have completed your lining put your "outer" tote inside your lining with the right sides of the fabrics facing each other. As seen in the below picture, your handles should be in between your lining and your "outer" tote.

Now sew along the top edge to attach the lining with the "outer" tote.

Once you have sewn all around the top edge, turn the tote inside out through the bottom of your lining. If you lay your tote flat it should look like this:

Now you can top stitch the bottom of your lining close using 1/8" seam allowance. Then place all of the lining inside your tote and top stitch all around the top of your tote using a 1/4" seam allowance and now your tote / handbag should look like this:

How to Sew a Potholder

Do you need new potholders at home? Why not sew your own potholders instead of purchasing new ones. Not only will it save you money but you can use any scrap fabric that you may already have at home and it is a lot of fun. Just follow my step-by-step instructions on how to sew a potholder.

These potholders will also brighten up the day for any of your family members, friends and loved ones so don't forget to sew them some potholders as well.

I chose three types of Amy Butler Fabric for my potholder projects:

Amy Butler Full Moon Polka Dot Camel
Amy Butler Garden Maze Brown
Amy Butler Trailing Cherry Brown

In addition, you will need some thick interfacing as well.

I wanted a different Amy Butler fabric design for each side of my potholder. I cut two squares measuring 9" X 9":

Now iron on the thick interfacing on each fabric square:

Place the two fabric squares left side together and sew them together using 1/4" seam allowance:

For the binding and the loop, I cut a fabric strip measuring 2" wide and 44" long (width of the fabric). Fold the fabric strip in half and iron it. Once iron, "open" the fabric strip and fold the outer edge towards the middle and iron again:

Then fold the fabric strip in half again and iron:

Now open up the fabric strip and pin it up along one side of the potholder using 1/4" seam allowance as shown in the below picture. Start sewing 1/2" from the outer edge and ...

...end sewing 1/2" from the below outer edge as shown here:

At the corner, fold the binding strip at a 45 degree angle:

Refold the binding strip back onto itself so that it turns the corner - see following three pictures for clarification. It sounds a lot more difficult than it is:

Now sew the binding strip on to the next side of the potholder:

Repeat the last couple steps and continue to sew the binding strip around the entire potholder. Once you have completed all four sides, your project should look like this. The binding strip should be sticking out at the end which will be made into a loop at the end.

Now fold the binding strip around the edge onto the other side of the potholder and pin it all around like this:

To make sure you end up with nice corner, pin the corners just as shown here:

Continue to fold the binding strip and all edges and once you get to the last corner and the "tail" end of the binding strip, your project should look like this:

Sew a seam at the end of the binding strip:

Turn the end of the binding strip inside out - see next two pictures on how your binding strip should look now:

Now fold the tail end of the binding strip and make a loop. Top stitch the loop to the "main body" of the potholder and continue to top stitch all around the potholder.....

...and once you have top stitch all side of the potholder, you are done!

Now that was not as difficult as you may have thought it would be, is it?

Aren't these potholders absolutely gorgeous? It sure does not take a lot of fabric to make them. Once you practiced sewing the binding strip a couple of times, it's a piece of cake. Now go through your fabric stash and pick out the fabrics for your very own potholders.

How to make a Fabric Coffee Sleeve

Today we'll show you step-by-step on how to make a fabric coffee sleeve. It is a wonderful project that can be done in one afternoon and the fabric coffee sleeve makes a great gift. A fabric coffee sleeve is reusable, washable and environmentally friendly. Furthermore, you need only a little bit of scrap fabric. That's as good as it gets!

If you don't drink coffee, then use it as a tea sleeve. Who does not like to drink their tea without burning their hand?

First of all, save your next paper sleeve that you get with your daily morning coffee. Use the coffee paper sleeve as your "pattern".

Add 1/4 inch to your pattern for seam allowance.

Cut out your paper pattern. Use it to trace the coffee sleeve pattern on to your desired fabric and cut two fabric pieces. In this case, I used a beautiful Moda fabric polka dot design from the Bistro fabric collection (we are unfortunately sold out of this design and collection).

Place the two fabric pieces right side together. Start to sew along the top (long) edge of the sleeve leaving 1/4 inch at the front and back of the edge in addition to leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Then sew along the bottom / short edge of the sleeve leaving about 2 inches at the front and back of the edge in addition to leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. See below picture.

Now turn the fabric sleeve right side out.

Now sew the sides of the sleeve together leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Once you have stitch the sides together, you are almost done.

You just need to top stitch at the opening that we used to turn the sleeve inside out. Voila, another fabric project completed successfully.

Amy Butler Fabric Key Chain

If you want to inspire and stimulate your creativity, just take a look at all the hundreds of Amy Butler fabric designs that are available. When I laid my eye on the Amy Butler Lacework Grey fabric design from her Lotus Collection, I fell in love with its various floral patterns. It did not take me long to come up with the idea of making a beautiful Amy Butler fabric key chain.

The project is as simple as it gets and it allows the beauty of this Amy Butler fabric to shine. I picked two Amy Butler fabric designs for my key chain: Amy Butler Lacework Grey and Amy Butler Floating Buds Sage. In addition to the fabric, you need a metal key chain with ring and some double sided glued interfacing.

I cut out one of the flowers from the Lacework fabric which will make one side of the key chain.

Place the cut out flower on to the interfacing.

I used the Amy Butler Floating Buds Sage fabric to make a loop which is going to connect the flower and the key ring.

Lightly zig zag stitch the loop to the flower. Now put the Floating Buds fabric on the other side of the flower and iron all pieces together which is being held together by the double sides glued interfacing.

The last step is to zig zag stitch all around flower the outer edge of the Lacework flower. I choose a green thread that perfectly matches the Amy Butler Floating Buds sage fabric but provides a beautiful contrast to the Amy Butler Lacework grey fabric. Now you are done!

What is a FAT QUARTER?

Have you ever wondered what a Fat Quarter is, why it is cut in the shape it is and what you can do with a Fat Quarter? This article will explain to you what a Fat Quarter is, how it is cut and what the advantages of a Fat Quarter.

One yard of quilting fabric usually measures 36 inches by 44 inches. If you cut this one yard into regular quarter yard cuts across the fabric’s crosswise grain you would get 4 fabric strips with each measuring 9 inches by 44 inches. This thin and long strip of fabric is not a very useful shape.

A Fat Quarter is also a quarter yard fabric but it has a different shape. To get a Fat Quarter you would divide one yard of quilting fabric into four large rectangles with each rectangle measuring 18 inches by 22 inches. This rectangle is your Fat Quarter and its shape is very versatile as it allows a larger variety of fabric pieces that can be cut with the extra height and you also get more fabric pieces on the vertical grain of the fabric.

What can I do with a Fat Quarter?

There are so many different quilting and crafting projects for which a Fat Quarter can be used for. Great projects for which you should consider a Fat Quarter for are table runners, book covers, wall hangings, baby quilts, bed quilts, fabric bowls, basket liners, placemat, album covers, handbags, potholders, pin cushions, etc. Now you know why quilters, sewers, crafters and scrap bookers all love Fat Quarters alike. Knowing how you can cut a Fat Quarter will help you plan and design your next creative project.

Here are some examples of how you can cut a Fat Quarter:

6 - 6.5" x 6.5" quilt squares
9 - 6" x 6" quilt squares
12 - 5" x 5" quilt squares
16 - 4.5 x 4.5" quilt squares
20 - 4" x 4" fabric squares

That is only a small list of how you can cut a Fat Quarter. With its versatile shape you can also cut round, oval and other odd shapes out of a Fat Quarter.

How To Make a FABRIC BOWL

Making a Fabric Bowl is as easy as ABC and it is a lot of fun. Just follow our step-by-step instructions and within an hour, you will be awarded with your very own Fabric Bowl. Let's get started.

Select your fabric of choice - I picked some beautiful Joel Dewberry Fabric for my Fabric Bowl project.

Used the size of your favorite bowl. Measure the bowl from side to side going underneath the bowl. That will give you the diameter of the circle you need to cut.

Cut two fabric circles , put the two fabric circles left side together and use a thick interfacing that has glue on both side to iron the two fabric circles together.

Now draw a circle in the center of one of your fabric circles. That will be your flat bottom. I used a small bowl to draw my circle - it should be at least 3 inches in diameter.

Now divide the fabric circle into eights. From the outside of the circle, measure 3 inches along the line you have drawn. Draw a triangle as show in the below picture - it is 3 inches long and 1 inch wide on the bottom.

Continue to do so all along the "eights" lines you have previous drawn.

You should end up with 8 triangles.

Now choose a zig zag stitch of your liking and stitch all along the circle in the center of your fabric circle.

Now it is time to zig zag stitch the triangles you have cut.

Start to zig zag stitch from the inner circle. When you get to the triangle, pull the sides of your triangle together and stitch it together with a tight zig zag stitch.

Continue to do so with all the triangles you have cut. Once done, your fabric circles have now taken on the shape of a bowl.

The last step is to zig zag stitch all around the edge of your fabric bow. Voila, you are done with your very own Fabric Bowl.

Have you noticed that the Fabric Bowl is reversible? That is why I choose two different types of fabric.

Kaffe Fassett - The Master of Colors

After reading Kaffe Fassett's Biography I was just so amazed by the talent that this man possess and the work he has displayed worldwide that I had to share some of the beautiful items I found on his website with you. Did you know that his one-of-a-kind art has been collected by Barbara Streisand or Shirley Maclaine?

The most fantastic thing is no matter what he is working on, may it be patchwork, mosaic, needlepoint, knitting or painting, his extraordinary skills of experimenting with new color palettes is extremely inspiring and contagious. I feel very drawn to any Kaffe Fassett fabric that have great compositions of bright colors including beautiful colors such as canary yellow or vivid magenta red. From now on, I will think of Kaffe Fassett as the Master of Colors.
