Quilted Pillow How-To-Guide

Want to learn how to sew a beautiful quilted pillow like this? All it takes is some fabric strips and about one hour of your time.

I took 10 fabric strips from the Dena Design Taza Fabric Jelly Roll. This Jelly Roll provides you with 1 fabric strip from each design in the Taza Collection.

Each fabric strip in the jelly roll is 2.5 inches wide. Take 2 strips and cut a 2.5 inch piece of each strip. You should end up with 2 fabric squares, each measuring 2.5" x 2.5".

Sew the two fabric squares together and top-stitch the seam (you don't have to top-stitch but I like the top-stitch look a lot).

Place the 2 sewn together squares on another fabric strip as shown here. Sew them together, up to where the 2 squares end and then cut the remaining fabric of the 3rd fabric strip off....

...end result should look this this.

Continue the previous steps and your quilt square should look like the following pictures...

You just continue to add one fabric strip after another to your square. I am making a pillow cover for a 18 inch insert so I need a square measuring 18.5" x 18.5". My finished square looks like this:

If your pillow insert is smaller, just cut the quilt square into the size you need. I always cut it 0.5 inch larger than the size of the pillow insert. Once done with sewing and serging the cover, you should end up with a pillow cover measuring 17.5" x 17.5". Your cover should always be smaller than the insert so the pillow looks nice and plumb once you put in the insert.

I cut another 18.5" x 18.5" piece for the other side of the pillow cover.

I put an invisible zipper for this pillow cover but you can do an envelope closure if you are not a fan of sewing in a zipper :)

Taking only a few fabric strips and about an hour of your time, you should end up with a gorgeous quilted pillow like this:

Using jelly rolls / pre-cut fabric strips is a great way to save time and money. You don't have to spend time on cutting the fabric (least favorite activity for most people) and you get a large variety of fabric designs without spending a fortune.

My friend Kyle really liked the fabric designs included in this Jenean Morrison fabric quilt square set. He asked for a few fabric squares and a rubber band and within a few minutes he made me.....

...these beautiful flower rosettes. Can you imagine that these flower rosettes were made with just a few fabric squares and a rubber band? I will re-create these and share a how-to-guide with all of you in the near future. I just couldn't wait to share these gorgeous fabric flower rosettes with you. Be inspired as I am.

I will take this beautiful flower rosette and tie it to my favorite pen so I will never lose my pen again. But these flower rosettes could be use for many purposes. How about attaching it to your little girl's hairband? Let your imagination takes its course.

Re-Upholstering with Free Spirit Home Decor Fabric

Sophie from Sophie Junction Blog purchased this large floral print by Jane Sassaman to re-upholster her wing chairs. Sophie was nice enough to allow me to use her pictures to share the results with all of you.

This home decor fabric is called Sweet Potato Vine Strawberry but it is unfortunately sold out at this point of time. It is part of the Prairie Gothic Collection that Jane Sassaman designed exclusively for Free Spirit. If you purchase high quality home decor fabric like this, you know it will stand up for daily use.

Scrap Fabric Coaster - How To Guide

Ever wonder what to do with your scrap fabric? If you are a fabric addict like myself, you will keep every little fabric scrap. See this mess of very thin scrap fabric strips.

These strips are all Jenean Morrison fabric designs, all of them part of her California Dreamin' Collection. I adore this fabric collection so I could not bear throwing it out. I took three of the longest fabric strips and tied the ends in a know as shown in the picture here:

Next, I started braiding the thin fabric strips. I ended up with about 1 1/2 yard of braided fabric.

I hand stitched the fabric strips togehter right underneath the knot. Once stitched together, I cut off the knot so my coaster is nice and flat. I just started forming a "snail" with the braided fabric and handstitched it at the bottom as I went until along. I kept going until I ended up with this beautiful round coaster:

If your fabric strips are too short, just hand stitched them together before starting to braid. My strips were about 2 yards long and I ended up with a 1 1/2 yard string once braided.

Aren't you glad you did not throw your scrap fabric away? There are so many great creative projects that can be made with scrap fabric. Just a little imagination, inspiration and lots of beautiful scrap fabric and you will be good to go for your next creative endeavor! Have fun.

In 2010, manufacturer Westminster Fibers asked her to design a fabric collection exclusive for them and the Fairlyte Garden Collection was born. These pictures features the famous Etsuko Furuya Japanese Fabric designer at the Quilt Market. Etsuko Furuya is a household name in the fabric world. Looking at her Echino fabric designs, you cannot help but be inspired.

You will find many many creative project ideas just by looking at these two pictures. The tall lampshade in the back of this first picture was made using the Echino Woodland Forest Fabric design.

The cuts out laying on the table and the same cut outs sewn on the bags were done utiling the Echino Bird Border Fabric.

These two handbags were made using the Echino Bonbon Brown and the Echino Bonbon Natural fabric. As you can see, it takes only a good look at Etsuko Furuya sitting at the Seven Island Manufacturer's booth to come up with enough creative projects to last you through the year.

How To Sew A Wristlet

Following are detailed step by step instructions on how to sew a wristlet. With Christmas being just around the corner, I thought you would like to make your own unique and affordable gifts. Who would not like a wristlet as beautiful as this one:

1/4 yard of your choice of designer fabric (this is a perfect project to use a fat quarter size cut fabric piece)
lining fabric
fusible fleece interfacing
9" zipper
nickel lobster claw
pins and other sewing tools

Step 1:

Cut your fabric into 2 pieces each measuring 6" X 10". Round the corners on two sides of the fabric piece; that will be the rounded bottom of your wristlet.

Repeat this step using your lining fabric.

Repeat the same step with your interfacing but cut your interfacing 1/4" smaller. So, 2 pieces of interfacing should measure 5.75" X 9.75".

For the wristlet and the pull, cut a strip of fabric measuring 1.5" X 14".

Step 2:

Once you have all fabric pieces cut, you are ready to start sewing the zipper to your "outside" fabric. Pin the zipper on to the "right" side of your as pictured. Sew the zipper to your fabric but leaving about 1/2" at the end.

Repeat this step for the other side - see picture:

Once done with this step, it should look like this:

Step 3:

Take your fabric strip that measures 1.5" X 14" to make your wristlet and your pull. Iron your fabric strip in half and pin both sides towards the center of the strip and start sewing. See pictures on how to do so:

Once done, cut a 2" piece off the wristlet - that will be your pull:

Take the 2" piece and sew it right underneath the opening end of your zipper as shown here:

Now your can sew the two fabric pieces that are connected by the zipper together. Make sure to leave your zipper at least half way open otherwise you will not be able to turn your wristlet inside out once done. Your wristlet should look like this at this time:

Step 4:

Now we are going to work on the lining. Line up your two pieces of lining. Start sewing about 1/4" from the top and pass your rounded corner and stop. Repeat the step on the other side - that will leave you with a 2-3" opening on the bottom of your lining.

Step 5:

Now we will sew the lining and the outside fabric together. Pin one side of your lining to the zipper as shown here:

Once you have pin the lining to the zipper, sew both sides together. Repeat this step for the other size of your lining. Once done, your finished product should look like this:

Now you can turn your wristlet inside out through the opening you left in the lining.

Close the opening in your lining.

Take the 12" fabric strip and attach it to your lobster claw:

At this point, you will have these two parts:

To finish up, all you need to do is attach your lobster claw to your pull and you are done!

Voila....here is your finished product:

There are easier ways and methods to sew a wristlet but this is a very professional way to construct your wristlet. The ends of your zipper look very clean and nicely tucked in between your lining and outside fabric. I hope my step by step instructions on how to sew a wristlet and all the pictures are going to help you make this a wonderful sewing project.

As mentioned earlier, this is a great project for which you should use fat quarters. One fat quarter is enough fabric for the outside of your wristlet. If you saw a beautifully crafted fabric that entails wonderful details and animated colors, sure it is Heather Bailey fabric design. For Heather, being a designer comes second only to being a mother. Also, if she feels that her children are contented, that’s the only time she can suffice her unstoppable need to create wonderful art objects. Creativity for Heather is a lifelong process, it will not stop at a certain point in life but will continue blossoming as you learn and pick many new techniques and ideas along the way.

Being young, Heather already knew that her passion and adornment over art pieces will take her higher into the next level. At the age of 8, her first project was a pair of terrycloth made side by side with cardboard flip flops. In her 6th grade, she was able to create a three foot long banana slug crocheted using a yellow yarn bought from a thrift store. Following her inevitable needs and wants to create exceptional and colorful pieces of art, she then ventured on nearly all forms of art like quilting, doll making, knitting, ceramics, upholstery, stained glass, silver smithing and all others as long as it has something to do with arts.

At first, Heather took a Pre-Med Course taking chances for her being a very good surgeon. However, she was more interested on attending other classes such as “The History of Costume and Pattern Drafting” that made her feel the need to have a change of heart and shift from a medical career to being an artist. Following her passion for arts and crafts, in 1996, Heather earned a Bachelor’s degree in Apparel Design which opens her unlimited chances to create wonderful art pieces based from her own distinctive mind. Her very first company was all about children’s hat named Noggins. This little hat company slowly metamorphosed into a women’s accessory carrying the infamous product Trash Ties. Thru her wonderful creations and unique pieces, this flair designer then opens her opportunity to venture and embrace the art of designing fabrics. Her rich taste of design and exceptional talent to create stunning patterns and designs put her products on famous boutiques in the world like Fred Segal, Henri Bendel’s, Bloomingdales and all others.

Heather Bailey is a full time mom who loves to enjoy taking care of her kids while pursuing her well loved passion of designing and creating wonderful pieces of art. According to her “It is my aim to bring more women and families to know the joy and deep fulfillment that comes from creativity and from nurturing our families with the work of our hands”. Being a responsible mother and passionate worker made Heather’s name “BIG” in the textile industry.

I am so excited to announce that Imagine Fabric and our sister company Imagine Throw Pillows is now working with HGTV's most talented interior designer Taniya Nayak. Imagine Fabric and Imagine Throw Pillows will exclusively supply Tanyia with designer fabric and designer throw pillows for her new show "Destination Home" that will air March 2010.

Most of you already know Taniya Nayak as she is currently one of the host for the extremely popular show "Designed to Sell" on HGTV. Who has not seen that show?

Taniya and her most wonderful design assistant Nicole have taken time out of their extremely busy schedule to feature us on their blogs. Make sure to stop by Taniya's blog and Nicole's blog.

Seeing blog post or articles over the internet saying that boring and dull looking sofa or chair can be transformed magically using floral fabric seems to be hoax and just a piece of marketing idea for most. But wait until you see this wonderful creation straight from one of our favorite customers, Maggie. The pictures that will be presented to you are real and genuine customer submitted photos and not collected from any source. Be prepared and be ready for this!

The red sofa chair at first glance looks very warm and comfortable but lacking with vibrancy and excitement. You can see that it lacks on color that makes the room very uninteresting and sad looking. But after the chair has been upholstered using the Sofia fabric, you can instantaneously see the big difference. The sofa chair alone looks very vivid and so glowing; furthermore it creates an atmosphere that resembles to a fresh floral garden with sweet scents and rich colors on it.

Taking this before and after picture on the next step, you can see that the newly upholstered sofa chair gives the room a nice and very homey feeling compared to the dull and uninteresting look by the red colored sofa. It opens a whole new dimension of freshness and friendly mood into the room. The details of the fabric which is floral design are set in different lifelike tones and hues that gives it a more naturalistic appeal rather than being loud and too flashy. It conveys a design and pattern that is simple on the eyes yet extravagant to feel. You can also see based from the picture above how wonderfully this fabric enlightens and further illuminated the overall look of the room.

Moda Fabric is becoming more and more popular everyday. And for good reasons - Moda works with a wonderful group talented designers that create the most wonderful Moda Fabric Collections. About every four months, we have a "difficult" job of selecting our favorite Moda Fabric collection for our next creative project.

The more popular Moda Fabric becomes, the more often do I receive questions about the Moda pre-cut fabric lovingly called "baked goods" by Moda and all their fans. Following is a brief description on the various Moda pre-cut fabrics.

Moda Fat Quarter Bundle:

Each Moda Fat Quarter Bundle contains one Fat Quarter from each designs part of a particular collection. Each Fat Quarter measures 18" x 22".

Featured here is the Moda Tranquility Fat Quarter Bundle which contains 40 Fat Quarters for a total of 10 yards of fabric!

Moda Layer Cake:

A Moda Layer Cake consists of 40 pre cut fabric squares. Each fabric squares measures 10" x 10" and you receive one fabric square from each design part of a particular Moda Collection.

Moda Jelly Roll:

A Moda Jelly Roll consists of 40 pre-cut fabric strips. Each fabric strips measures 2.5" x 44" and you will receive one fabric strip from each fabric design from a particular Moda collection.

Moda Honey Bun:

Just like the Moda Jelly Roll, the Moda Honey Bun consists of 40 pre-cut fabric strips. However, the strips measure 1.5" x 44" versus the 2.5" strips in the Jelly Roll.

Moda Charm Pack:

A Moda Charm Pack is a set of pre-cut fabric squares with each fabric square measuring 5" x 5". Depending on the Moda Collection, the Moda Charm Pack could contain 25 fabric squares up to 60 squares.

Working with Moda Pre-Cut fabric "baked goods" can be most advantageous. First of all, you receive an entire collection in one little bundle or roll. Looking at the various designs and colors mixed in a collection is very inspiring.

Second of all, since all fabrics are pre-cut you don't have to spend hours on cutting your fabrics before starting your favorite part of a project - sewing. Not to mention the frustration it may save you since you won't be cutting your fabric unevenly or in the incorrect size.

Last but not least, it can also save you a lot of money. Instead of purchasing many different designs by the yard and having plenty of leftover fabric, you will have plenty of fabric with any of the Moda baked goods to make one larger project or multiply smaller projects without wasting any fabric.
